Theatre Orchard was delighted to recently work in collaboration with Fostering North Somerset to bring an online, cyberspace talent show to the Zoom screen, showcasing the star quality of looked after children.

The ‘It’s All About You’ show was part of the annual Children’s Awards Day hosted by Fostering North Somerset, which was digitally re-imagined this year due to the current covid restrictions.

Presented by Star Stuff Productions and Theatre Orchard, ‘It’s All About You’ invited cared for children from throughout North Somerset to take part in a series of fun, virtual workshops. These included an introductory session from Ramona Bigwood of Star Stuff Productions with subsequent workshops featuring a host of local, creative practitioners, showcasing dance, drama, singing, poetry and more.

Theatre Orchard’s Engagement Manager Angela Athay-Hunt ran ‘We Are All Made of Stars’ drama sessions for 5 – 11 and 12 to 17 year olds and ‘Lions and Tigers and Bears in Space!’ for under 5s and their carers, whilst dance practitioner Vic Hole got groups grooving in ‘Moon Moves’ sessions.

Hannah Preece at Big Voice, Big World delivered a voice and singing workshop and ‘Journey to Planet Me’ transported participants in a spoken word workshop from performance poet and writer Saili Katebe.

Children and young people were also encouraged to send in their own videos capturing a dazzling array of talents and skills, which were showcased in a ‘Star Stuff Talent Show’ film that was premiered at the online Children’s Awards Day on 31 January 2021.

Participants ranging from toddlers to teenagers, became stars of the cyberspace galaxy with the spotlight shining on their many talents from singing, dancing and musical instrument playing to gymnastics, yodelling and space lego!

In addition to children and their carers, staff from the fostering team and children’s social workers and support workers were at the red-carpet themed event, which ended with a finale Flashmob dance, played out to the ‘It’s All About You’ McFly song lyrics.

To commemorate the Children’s Award 20/21, each child and young person in the care of North Somerset and the children of North Somerset foster/kinship carers received a ‘You are a Certified Star’ certificate, carrying the wording  ‘keep using your talents and making your voice heard in the galaxy/world’

‘You are made of Star Stuff’ trophies were presented by their carers to all the children and young people who attended the event, participated in the workshops and/or sent in their talent videos.

It is hoped that this is just the start of a longer-term creative collaboration between Theatre Orchard and Fostering North Somerset, and an open invitation exists for all young people in the area to join Theatre Orchard’s regular Youth Theatre Offer which is detailed HERE
